How To Clean Your Oven How To Clean Your Oven 06 January 2014

Why should I clean my oven?
Over time grease builds up in your oven and any stray bits of food will get stuck and burn to a crisp. The more you allow the grease to build up, the less efficient your oven will be which means having to wait a lot longer for your food to cook and having your bill prices rise. By leaving it longer to accumulate, you also make more work for yourself as it will be harder to clean when you do get around to it so you will have to leave the cleaning solution to set in for longer and use a bit more elbow grease. If some food is stuck in a part of your oven, every time you go to cook something it will burn even more and start smoking, giving all of your food a very charred taste and leaving you with a very temperamental smoke alarm.

How do I clean it?
1.    Remove any racks, trays or shelves. To clean any removable parts, you should take them out and place them in a sink. With an abrasive cleaner such as a metal scourer, you should clean off as much of the grime as you can in the usual way you would clean your dishes. Once you’ve done this, apply over cleaner to the area and scrub it in. Add more if needed and leave the cleaner to set in for as long as it says on the bottle. After this, use the scourer to scrub off any grease finishing by washing and drying the items.

2.    Clean the oven and grill. Before you put oven cleaner inside the chamber, remove any large pieces of food debris and turn the oven on a low heat for a short amount of time before turning it off again. This causes the grease to melt slightly and a background heat makes it easier to remove. Spread oven cleaner all over the chamber, scrub in and leave as the bottle instructs.  Wipe away the solution with a damp cloth and keep wiping until all of the grease is removed and you can wipe the inside without having any marks transferred to your cloth. If any marks are left, scrape them off. Once the chambers are cleaned, you can then replace all of the cleaned and dried racks, trays and shelves.

3.    Clean the glass door. You can clean the inside of the glass with oven cleaner in the same way as the oven and grill chambers as it too will have grease residue stuck to it. The outside can be clean like normal windows with a wipe and glass cleaner.

It is very simple to spot when your oven needs cleaning. The efficiency will dramatically be reduced and you will be able to see the grease build up and discolouration on the walls. There might also be a strong greasy or burning smell being released each time you turn on the cooker. When you’re cleaning the oven and grill, be careful to not ruin he rubber seals around the door. The best way to clean an oven is often. If you clean any spillages as soon as they have happened, not only will it be easier to remove but you will also have less to clean when you clean the whole appliance. Like any other household appliance, there is always a professional cleaning option. This may be pricy but you can be guaranteed that they will do a thorough job and have the equipment needed to do everything so you won’t have to go out and buy oven cleaning solution.
