A Guide to Winter Cleaning A Guide to Winter Cleaning 27 August 2013

Cleaning is always a demanding task since it takes much of your time and energy. But cleaning becomes even more difficult during winter, when everything is so “frozen”. Everyone wants to stay indoors, where is warm and cozy, rather than wandering outside. And because of that, most of the family gatherings happen at home. That`s why you should have a checklist with winter chores that you should before the winter takes its rightful place. Here are a few ideas with what might need to be done in winter:

•    If you have a chimney and you like to make a fire on a regular basis during winter, then cleaning the chimney before you make the first fire is something that must be done. But since you probably don’t have the necessary experience and equipment, it would be better to call some professionals to clean the chimney for you. Don’t try doing this by yourself, since you can injure yourself. And don’t think that cleaning your chimney is not necessary: if you don’t do it, the chances of a chimney fire increase considerably.

•    You should ask professionals to check your furnaces as well. They will be able to provide you with any information you need on how to maintain your furnace clean. Also , don’t forget to change the furnace filters monthly throughout the season.

•    Another thing that must be done in winter is to clean and flip your mattresses. This will reduce the number of dust mites and will you prevent you from developing allergies. You don’t need experience or some fancy equipment to do this, all you need to do is to vacuum the mattress, flip it on the other side and vacuum it again. Also, if you want more protection you can use some spray against dust mites, which usually can be purchased from supermarkets.

•    The winter is the season when you should also sort out your pantry. It might sound like it will take a lot of time, but it usually doesn’t. All you need is a trash bag. Take all the cans and jars and check their expiry date. If you can`t find the “use by” dates or they are not readable anymore, just put the cans in the bag. Your health is more important than that.

Winter cleaning is not more difficult than in other seasons, but because of the weather it might seem so. Still, if you know exactly what to do, you can make a checklist which will help you keep track of your progress. Also, cleaning in winter can become quite “slow” especially because most people think of winter as a festive season and not one in which they should be busy with housework all the time. But it doesn’t have to be like that, you don’t need to spend hours to clean the house, and if you feel like not doing this task by yourself then ask your loved ones to help you. It will be a family activity, and to make everything more interesting you can listen to some festive music while doing it. There are plenty of cheerful Christmas songs that might help you get in the mood.
